Reading aloud at bedtime — what actually works.
A small toolkit for the last ten minutes of the day, written from inside families that read every night, not from inside a research lab.
Same story twice is not a problem.
Children ask for repeats because the next time through, they get to pay attention to different things. Read it again. Read it the fourth time. The book is the same; the child reading it isn't.
Slow down. More than you think.
Adults under-pace bedtime reading by a lot. Slower than you talk. Slower than your podcast voice. Almost slow enough to feel weird. That's the right speed.
End on a settled scene.
The last page should feel like exhale, not like the tension is going somewhere. If a book ends on a cliff, skip the cliff for tonight.
One story is plenty.
The promise is “one more story.” Keep the promise. A second one almost never settles a kid; it almost always invites a third.
Routine beats novelty.
Familiar Koydo friends, the same blanket, the same two-paragraph cooldown afterwards. Bedtime works on pattern, not on excitement.
